The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Lead Counsel, Environmental PSC / JV Dispute Management. This role is crucial in handling environmental dispute management and ensuring regulatory awareness within the corporation.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the Lead Counsel, Environmental PSC / JV Dispute Management are:

  • Manage activities required for environmental dispute management related to upstream oil and gas spillage/fire incident cases and downstream oil spillage cases.
  • Ensure the dissemination of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) regulatory awareness across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

The Lead Counsel will be responsible for a range of critical tasks, including:

  1. Environmental Cause List Management
    • Handle and manage all environmental cause lists to ensure proper documentation and tracking of ongoing cases.
  2. Legal Document Preparation
    • Prepare legal documents such as complaints, motions, briefs, and subpoenas related to environmental disputes.
    • Draft documents in compliance with legal standards and procedures.
  3. Scientific Research Review
    • Review scientific research related to environmental cases to build strong legal arguments.
    • Utilize research findings to support legal strategies and case management.
  4. Legal Research and Argument Formation
    • Conduct thorough research on applicable laws and regulations to form sound legal arguments for cases.
    • Stay updated on recent legal developments to provide accurate and effective legal advice.
  5. Case Review and Appeal Grounds Determination
    • Review decided cases to determine if there are grounds for appeal.
    • Analyze case outcomes and strategize potential appeal processes.
  6. Legislation and Regulation Monitoring
    • Monitor legislation and regulations to identify potential conflicts that may affect ongoing or future cases.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  7. External Counsel Coordination
    • Follow up with external counsel for updates on cases.
    • Coordinate with external legal teams to ensure cohesive legal strategies.
  8. HSE Regulatory Awareness Cascade
    • Ensure the dissemination of HSE regulatory awareness throughout the organization.
    • Promote adherence to HSE standards and regulations.

Educational Qualifications

Candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  • A University Degree in Law.
  • Barrister at Law (BL) qualification is mandatory.
  • Professional qualifications and membership in relevant professional bodies such as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) are required.

Experience

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A minimum of 9 years of relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Experience in the oil and gas industry, which will be an added advantage.
