Job Summary
As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will provide essential support to physicians in delivering patient care. You will perform a variety of data collection functions to facilitate accurate medical diagnoses and professional assessments of patients’ ocular health.
Responsibilities
- Establish rapport with patients and initiate their evaluations by documenting their chief complaints, history of present illness, and all pertinent ocular findings.
- Perform pre-exam testing, including visual acuity assessment, pinhole and glare testing, confrontational visual field testing, extraocular muscle assessment, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, and more.
- Conduct specialized testing such as lensometry, visual fields, keratometry, A/B scans, and optical coherence tomography (OCT).
- Perform retinoscopy and refractometry.
- Assist with minor surgical procedures and laser treatments in the office.
- Handle prescription refill requests as authorized by the physician, with thorough documentation in the patient chart.
- Educate patients about medication administration and pre- and post-operative care instructions.
- Assist with fitting contact lenses and instruct patients on their care and insertion.
- Maintain an inventory of ophthalmic supplies, including pharmaceuticals and instruments, ensuring timely replacements.
- Clean and inspect surgical instruments, prepare them for sterile processing, and manage any repairs or replacements needed.
- Monitor and document the temperature of the medical refrigerator and manage the inventory of refrigerated items.
- Ensure exam lanes are opened and closed daily, with equipment properly maintained and stored.
- Adhere to all safety procedures and guidelines.
Requirements
- High school diploma.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a professional appearance.
- Preferably one year of specialized ophthalmic experience or completion of on-the-job training upon hiring.
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) credential is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
