The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking to fill the position of Safeguarding Officer, based in Zamfara, Nigeria. This role is critical in ensuring the safety and protection of vulnerable individuals within IRC’s programs.
Job Overview
As a Safeguarding Officer, you will report directly to the Senior Safeguarding Manager, with additional oversight from the Regional Safeguarding Advisor. Your primary responsibility will be to support the Safeguarding team in implementing IRC’s safeguarding policies across Nigeria. You will play a key role in helping all IRC departments achieve their strategic and safeguarding objectives.
Major Responsibilities
Learning and Coordination:
- Capacity Building: Coordinate training sessions for project staff, partners, volunteers, and other stakeholders. These sessions will include formal training, refresher courses, case study discussions, and quizzes.
- Induction Facilitation: Assist in organizing and conducting safeguarding inductions for newly recruited staff, volunteers, and partners.
- Reporting: Develop and compile monthly safeguarding training reports, and submit these reports to the Senior Safeguarding Manager.
- Proposal Review: Support the Senior Safeguarding Manager in reviewing proposals to ensure they include safeguarding measures and coordinate with the MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning) area to ensure compliance with safe programming indicators.
Programming Integration:
- Training Needs: Identify and address training needs related to safeguarding children and protecting adults at risk in humanitarian settings.
- Material Translation: Oversee the translation of safeguarding materials into local dialects and manage their distribution.
- Risk Assessment: Support safeguarding risk assessments for all sectors, projects, and partners.
- Learning Forums: Organize learning forums on safeguarding practices at various levels, including camps, host communities, schools, and other safe spaces.
- Technical Guidance: Provide technical guidance on safeguarding to partners, volunteers, IRC associates, and other stakeholders.
- Supervision and Monitoring: Assist with supervision and monitoring visits to project sites and construction areas as requested.
- Record Keeping: Maintain records of safeguarding training participants, including staff, partners, and volunteers.
- Community Awareness: Support efforts to raise safeguarding awareness within the community.
- Additional Tasks: Perform any other tasks assigned by the line manager.

- Indirect/Technical Reporting: Deputy Team Lead/Field Coordinator

Qualifications
- Education: HND/B.Sc in Sociology, Social Work, Social Science, or a related field.
- Experience: 1 to 3 years of relevant experience in safeguarding, child protection, or general protection. Experience working with children and vulnerable adults in humanitarian or developmental contexts is required.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in MS Office, including Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to build trust and motivate others.
- Self-motivated with strong initiative.
- Fluency in Hausa/Kanuri languages is highly desirable.
- High level of confidentiality and attention to detail.
- Strong report writing, training, facilitation, and communication skills.
- Autonomous with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Knowledge of human rights, children’s rights, and protection issues in emergency situations.
