The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is actively seeking qualified candidates for the position of Lead Counsel, Secretarial / Board Matters. This role is vital in providing secretarial assistance to the General Counsel on board-related matters, ensuring effective document management, and maintaining the integrity of the company’s records.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the Lead Counsel, Secretarial / Board Matters position include:

  • Providing secretarial assistance to the General Counsel on board-related matters, including filing, indexing, archiving, and handling the company’s document management system.
  • Ensuring the protection and reliability of records.

Key Responsibilities

The Lead Counsel, Secretarial / Board Matters will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:

  1. Corporate Secretarial and Legal Services
    • Assist the General Counsel in providing effective, efficient, and qualitative corporate secretarial and legal services to the NNEL Board and Management.
    • Compile and update lists of Letters of Intent and approved Board Memorandum.
  2. Document Management and Record Keeping
    • Monitor and keep track of mails and books in the General Counsel’s Office and Law Library.
    • Supervise the Registry in the Legal Department.
    • Develop and maintain the Document Management System.
    • Ensure the reliability of records and construct a reasonable level of protection for records (private, confidential, privileged, secret, or classified).
    • Transfer records to historical archives and ensure secure and appropriate records disposition.
  3. Efficiency and Reliability
    • Assist in providing an efficient, effective, and reliable documents and records management system.

Educational Qualifications

Candidates must possess the following educational qualifications:

  • A University Degree in Law; Barrister at Law (BL) qualification is a must, and candidates must have been called to the bar.
  • A Master’s Degree in Law or any other relevant post-graduate degree is an added advantage.
  • Professional qualification and membership of a relevant professional body, such as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), is required.

Competence

The role requires a wide range of competencies, including:

  • Skilled in Oil and Gas Industry regulations and laws.
  • Mastery in legal case handling and analytics.
  • Skilled in statutory laws and legal advisory.
  • Mastery in legislation interpretation and the principles of corporate governance.
  • Presentation and negotiation skills.
  • Mastery in relationship management, ethics, integrity, and values management.
  • Skilled in organizational awareness and business understanding.
  • Skilled in planning and budgeting.
  • Mastery in regulatory compliance enforcement.

Experience

Candidates should have:

  • A minimum of 9 years of relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Experience in the oil and gas industry is an added advantage.
